Carl: Hello business owners this is Carl Kleimann from Odyssey OneSource with a Business Survival Tip. Did you know that a 2005 report by the Small Business Administration concludes that the cost of complying with government regulation is nearly 50% higher for small businesses than it is for larger firms.
Small businesses often lack the expertise, the resources, and systems of larger organizations. This is particularly true of employment related regulations in smaller firms that don’t have the luxury of an HR department. In these firms, the business owner is likely spending his or her precious time dealing with issues that they are neither experienced nor passionate about.
Now more than ever, small business owners are perplexed by the amounts of time and energy that are consumed by these non productive, non revenue producing tasks. And as luck would have it, the cost of non-compliance is rising sharply under President Obama’s administration. Hilda Solis, our nation’s 25th Secretary of Labor, has promised a less employer friendly Department of Labor with stronger enforcement of existing labor laws.
So what can you do to minimize your frustration and level the playing field with your larger competitors? Consider outsourcing these tasks to a larger firm that enjoys the economy of scale that you lack. That is exactly what Professional Employer Organizations (or PEOs) offer. PEOs typically have thousands of employees and in some cases, tens of thousands. They are staffed with experts in every aspect of employment from government compliance and training, to employee benefits and payroll. In short, PEOs combine the employees from hundreds or even thousands of small employers in order to create the economies of scale that you need to be competitive. Imagine having an expert at your fingertips anytime that you have an employment related issue or question. Think of all of the extra time that you could spend working on your business rather than in your business.
